The Problem: Fatigue Kills

How DMS Works

A DMS camera mounts on the dashboard, facing the driver. Infrared LEDs illuminate the face (works at night). The onboard AI processor analyzes facial landmarks 30 times per second.

Detection capabilities:

• Yawning — mouth open beyond threshold for >2 seconds
• Eye closure — PERCLOS metric (percentage of eye closure over time)
• Phone use — hand near ear or looking down at device
• Smoking — cigarette detected near mouth
• Distraction — gaze direction away from road for >3 seconds
• Seatbelt violation — shoulder strap not detected
• Driver change — face doesn't match registered driver profile

When an event triggers, the camera sends a snapshot and 10-second video clip to the platform. The dispatcher receives an alert within 2-3 seconds. Some devices also play an in-cab audio alarm.

DMS vs ADAS: Different Jobs

DMS faces the driver. Detects human behavior — fatigue, phone, smoking.

ADAS faces the road. Detects driving hazards — lane departure, forward collision, pedestrians, tailgating.
