Axle Load & Overload Compliance
Overview
Measure the weight on each axle in real time, and the total vehicle weight behind it — so overload is caught before a roadside inspection catches it, and so loading and unloading events are documented as they happen instead of reconstructed from paperwork the next day. Two sensor families cover the two suspension types found across heavy fleets. Mechanical leaf-spring suspension uses an angle-shift sensor mounted on the rear axle or bogie, reading the deflection of the spring stack as the vehicle is loaded. Pneumatic / air-suspension uses a pressure sensor in the air line, reading the compressed-air pressure that supports the load. Both report to the on-vehicle GPS tracker, which ties weight to time, location, and driver — making the data usable for fine avoidance, unauthorized-cargo detection, suspension maintenance forecasting, and trailer load balancing across the fleet.
Challenges
- Roadside axle-load inspections produce fines per axle, per offence — costs that compound across a long-distance route and reach finance long after the trip is over.
- Manual weighing at a depot weighbridge documents the load on departure but tells operations nothing about cargo added or removed mid-trip — the gap underhand-cargo schemes operate inside.
- Mixed fleets carry both leaf-spring and air-suspension vehicles. A single sensor type fits one suspension and not the other, so the program needs both technologies to cover the actual fleet.
- Suspension wear is dominated by overload events, not by total mileage. Without a per-trip load record, maintenance is scheduled on hours rather than actual stress — and worn suspensions fail on the road.
- Trailer balance affects tire wear, fuel burn, and braking distance. Without per-axle data the fleet has no way to coach loading-bay crews on how cargo should be positioned.
Benefits
- Per-axle weight in real time, alongside total vehicle weight, with the GPS tracker tying every reading to location and trip — overload is caught before a roadside check writes the ticket.
- Unauthorized loading and unloading events flagged as they happen. Operations sees the weight change, where it happened, and which driver was present — not three days later when a customer reports the missing pallet.
- Same telematics stack covers leaf-spring and air-suspension vehicles. Two sensor families, one sensor category, one reporting platform — no separate dashboard per truck class.
- Suspension maintenance scheduled against actual axle-load events instead of hours-on-the-road. Replacement parts forecast more accurately, and overload-driven failures stop showing up on the depot floor.
- Per-trip load reports for loading-bay coaching. Trailer balance, axle distribution, and cargo position all become measurable inputs to the loading procedure — not folklore.
