Sealed Tanker Systems: Preventing Fuel Theft with Smart Valves

TL;DR

Fuel tanker theft happens during transit: unauthorized discharge at unmarked stops. IPTech's sealed compartment system combines GPS geofencing, VEGA level sensors (measures exact product volume), smart locks on manholes, and explosion-proof valve controllers. Valves only open at pre-approved locations. Any discrepancy between loaded and delivered volume triggers an alert.

How Fuel Disappears

A fuel tanker leaves the loading terminal with 36,000 liters. It arrives at the gas station with 34,500 liters. Where did 1,500 liters go? "Evaporation" says the driver. Reality: an unauthorized stop, a quick discharge into waiting containers. This happens daily across Saudi Arabia's fuel distribution network.

The Sealed Compartment Approach

IPTech eliminates this with a four-component system:

  • GPS tracker with geofencing — defines approved loading/unloading locations. Any stop outside these zones triggers an alert.
  • VEGA level sensor — continuous measurement of product volume using 80GHz radar or guided wave. Accuracy: ±1mm. Detects any discharge event in real-time.
  • Smart locks on manholes and valves — electronic locks that only open when the truck is at an approved location AND the driver authenticates via RFID.
  • Explosion-proof valve controller — ATEX-certified. Automates valve opening/closing. Logs every operation with timestamp, GPS coordinates, and product volume.

Dielectric Detection

For tankers carrying refined products (diesel, gasoline), VEGA sensors can measure the dielectric value of the liquid. Each product has a known dielectric constant. If a driver attempts to dilute fuel with water, the dielectric reading shifts. The platform flags the contamination immediately.

Why This Matters for Saudi Arabia

Saudi Aramco's fuel distribution network is the largest in the Gulf. Custody transfer tracking between loading terminals, distribution depots, and retail stations is a supply chain integrity issue. IPTech deploys sealed tanker systems for distributors operating under Aramco contracts. The combination of GPS + level sensing + valve control creates an auditable chain from refinery to pump.
