The Challenge
Mwasalat, the national bus operator in Muscat, Oman, required a full ITS deployment across its fleet — covering automatic fare collection, on-board computing, audio announcement systems, VoIP driver communication, and panic-button safety. The technical complexity was significant: 13 different bus types from multiple manufacturers, each with its own wiring architecture and installation requirements. Getting manufacturer approval for every bus type — not a single compromise — was non-negotiable. The timeline ran through Ramadan. The project required coordination with multiple international firms, with a Saudi team managing end-to-end delivery. No Saudi-led organisation had previously completed an international-level public transport ITS project of this scope.
Our Solution
IPTech led the end-to-end ITS deployment across Mwasalat's entire fleet in Muscat. Manufacturer-compliant installation was completed on all 13 bus types, with specialised cabling and wiring adapted to each vehicle's architecture. Each bus was fitted with an on-board computer, a driver console, and a local network connecting all system components. Automatic fare collection was integrated into the passenger boarding workflow. Audio announcement systems and a driver VoIP microphone solution provide onboard communication. Panic buttons are wired into each bus. Media management covers all audio and visual content on board. The delivery ran through Ramadan without schedule loss, with the Saudi team coordinating component supply, installation, and commissioning across all bus types simultaneously.
The Results
Mwasalat's Muscat fleet operates with full ITS coverage — automatic fare collection, on-board computing, driver VoIP, and safety systems across every bus. All 13 bus manufacturers approved the IPTech installation, a requirement Mwasalat held as non-negotiable from project start. The deployment was completed on schedule through Ramadan. This was the first international-level public transport ITS project delivered by a Saudi team — a milestone that demonstrated IPTech's capacity to manage multi-manufacturer, multi-stakeholder ITS deployments outside Saudi Arabia.
